January 24th we hosted the world famous ( at least in the mind of these wonderful and fun loving Aussies) Cardboard Derby at Fernie Alpine Resort. Lots of fun for all to enjoy the antics of the various contraptions made out of cardboard and the special crews that ran each craft. Some went flying down the hill fast and fell apart quickly and others made it to the finish area and the coveted target at the bottom of the run. The craft closes to the target or hit the target was the winner!

Fernie Alpine Resort is known for SNOW. But when we do get those special sunny days it is amazing. In the last few days we have had clear blue skies and end of last week we had an inversion- when it was warmer on the mountain than it was in the town of Fernie, BC. In this picture it shows the clouds trapping the cool air in the valley. What a special sight this is!

the kids were pumped to rip down Fuzzy at Kimberley Alpine Resort and show their stuff. We are very proud of our Free Ski Series and all of the hardworking volunteers, judges and Jeff Holden who support making these events possible. Kudos to the Event Team of Stephanie Best and Jeni Sugiyama who make it all possible!

 

Early morning powder run! the early morning glow of the sun rising over the Elk Valley puts a shine on the ridge between Currie and Lizard Bowl

today was epic! Jan 1st 2009 came with incredible powder and it snowed most of the day. In the afternoon it really picked up and we had over 30cm in 3 hrs.....wow! this weekend is going to be epic!

what can we say! Mother Nature is bringing in a snowy 2009! We are so fortunate!! Our team of ski patrol and snow safety have been working very hard and we are very appreciative of their efforts to do all of there snow control work as given the magnitude of this snow cylce they have been very busy. Looks like another snowstorm hits late tonight and or Friday!! It is going to be very cold again in Calgary so check out the temps at Fernie as it will be much warmer in the mountains and a great time to escape the city! Snow and more snow!
